NOTICE
- Helmet Safety
the OAT Board of Directors will research
and review the safety standards associated with various protective head gear in order to determine what products will be acceptable
for equine therapy. We will be contacting ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials), SEI (Safety Equipment
Institute), NARHA (North American Riding for the Handicap) and the manufacturer of the ProtectaCap(R) (www.plument.com) for verification.
Safety is our TOP PRIORITY. We want our service to be SAFE for our clients.
We also need for our clients and their families to understand what a liability inadequate head protection is for our
program. In order for our program to have longevity and success; we must implement rigid safety requirements.
We intend to make MANDATORY an ASTM/SEI certified riding helmet. These helmets are furnished at each session by OAT
or can be purchased at a minimal cost by the client for approximately $35.00. The only exception will be riders who
have medical recommendation preventing them from wearing a helmet. These exceptions include but are not limited
to patients with shunts for hydrocephaly or major skull abnormalities. We have yet to determine how to handle such cases.
Please refer to the links and documents provided below for more information. Any questions
or concerns should be directed to Kristen Hembree; khembre@openarmstherapy.org or 806-333-7219.
